And its been particularly important sometimes when either democracy itself has been constrained, or when there have been rather authoritarian systems of government, and its usually the case that, in those forms of government, censors don’t have a very good sense of humor, so that, things can be said satirically, the purposes of which is understood by everybody except the censors. Sometimes satire is just poking fun of the discredited government, or even a government which isn’t discredited but needs to have its tail pulled in order to keep it in balance. Sometimes people make fun of you in a way which could be a bit hurtful but nevertheless, if you believe in a free society, you accepted part of the nature of the political weather. As a politician, you are better off being made fun of than not noticed at all. The real test is, are they funny, and are they making a real point, and are they doing it in a way which is not loaded or dishonest or unfair. And satire work best when within reasonable bound, I didn’t mean by that that its censored, but that it doesn’t go into unfair or unhand personal attacks. So I think you have to get used, as a politician, its like getting used to being made look absurd by cartoonists. Not everybody can look like George Clooney. I don’t know anything about suggestions of there should be a law to prevent parody or satire. 草根讀書人 I don’t want to get involved in commenting on the HK elections, but I think its true that probably, if you limit the amount of democratic involvement that people have, then you’ll likely to increase the amount of satirical comments and derides. “My anxiety is not that this community's autonomy would be usurped by Peking, but that it could be given away bit by bit by some people in Hong Kong.” The real guardian of people’s way of life is the way people behave themselves. I have never believed that Beijing would, as I said in that quote, would march in to Hong Kong and trample over people’s liberties. But its very important to listen to those politicians, those political leaders, who warn against Hong Kong’s freedom seeping away because people aren’t sufficiently, vigorously standing up for them. I think Hong Kong is still doing incredibly well. Hong Kong people should continue to believe in Hong Kong. That doesn’t mean that democrats should stop pressing for more democracy, that’s entirely understandable. It doesn’t mean that people can forget about the importance of standing up for their civil liberties. That’s crucial. It doesn’t mean that people shouldn’t be concerned about maintaining the rule of law. I repeat that people have be on their toes all the time to make sure that freedom isn’t being eroded bit by bit. And there may be things that happen from time to time which make people a bit nervous or bit concerned. But I certainly don’t think that Hong Kong is about to lose its freedom. There is a commitment now to full democracy in Hong Kong. I can’t think that the authorities in Beijing or the government in Hong Kong would want to resile from that promise.
